The University of New Orleans, locally referred to as simply UNO, is a medium-sized public urban university located on the New Orleans Lakefront within New Orleans, the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana, having more than 484 000 people, living within its limits, as estimated during the 2000 census.
UNO was established in 1958 and was originally called Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Its current name was adopted in February, 1974, the name changing being approved by the LSU Board of Supervisors, the new name more accurately defining the institution as the metropolitan campus of the LSU System.
The university currently offers its students a vast array of educational programs, through its 5 colleges, which are: the College of Business Administration, of Education and Human Development, of Engineering, of Liberal Arts and the College of Science.
UNO's athetic teams are known as the New Orleans Privateers and they currently compete in the Sun Belt Conference. However, the university will be a Division I independent for the coming future, as it transitions towards division III. Their distinctive colors are reflex blue and silver, and their mascots are Lafitte, an alligator, and Pierre the Pirate.
